The thing is that - if done with integrity - reaching out to new customers can be EXTREMELY effective.
1. The Medium Has Changed
Don't freak out yet, because I'm NOT actually going to recommend you pick up the phone!
You can just as easily reach out to people by email or social media - and these are mediums much more comfortable for many of us these days anyway.
It's lower pressure.
2. The Message Has Changed.
The days of "Hello Stranger, I've got this thing I think could help you." are WAY OVER.
And that's not how we roll as Mixologists after all.
It's enough just to start a conversation with someone new.
I did this in a few ways last month.
But I didn't hit her with a pitch. I emailed her with my excitement and links to the
podcast itself. While letting her know I'd love to work with her on it.
That resulted in a one-on-one call. And even though I'd been nervous about reaching
out to her like that (who isn't nervous about that?!), she said she was so glad I did.
Turns out it wasn't so scary at all.
My enthusiasm could not have been more sincere! As someone who combs the
internet everyday for above-par social media news, I find myself constantly grateful
for how much easier they make my job.
I was just writing with sincere gratitude. But that led to them looking at my blog and
asking me to become a regular contributing writer. What?! I went from uber-fan to
part of their team just by reaching out.
And you know what? Each of them wrote back. And now I have regular email
conversations with people that I had been just silently admiring and swooning over.
One asked me to be a part of his research project.
And whether these new contacts lead to sales or NOT, it feels amazing to let these
people know how much they are appreciated and become a bigger part myself of the
conversation that's happening in my industry.
This one was a real exercise in flexing my confidence muscles! I mean ... how many
of us just sit back and hope people will find US? There is something to be said for
making the first move. No, I haven't heard back. YET. But it was SO empowering that
I'll be doing it regularly.
YES. This IS Social Media.
In fact, it doesn't get more social than this.
