I am forever trying to get my learn on, y'all. Like all. the. time. So, I seriously depend upon my favorite podcasts to keep my grey matter in happy download mode.
For me, listening to exceptional Podcasts is the Ultimate in life-enriching multi-tasking. I'm not alone.
More than 2 years after I published this First edition Podcast Low-Down, it's still the most-read entry on my blog!
So, in honor of this month's #Trypod campaign, I'm updating that foundational list of favorites here with the most recent additions to my brain-queue!
But - confession - I rarely listen to podcasts about business.
A girl's gotta expand her mind past algorithms and social media reports, y'know?
During my 30 minute drives to and from "town." Through the grueling practice of grocery shopping. Hell, podcasts are even my secret weapon for making it through a dental appointment unscathed (Seriously, try it!)
These are Podcasts that will feed your hunger for knowledge, culture, and ideas. In business AND in life. Podcasts are one of the ways I make sure I learn something new every day!
They make me a better human. And by extension, a better business owner, too.
Why You'll Want To Tune In: Sci-Fi and Fantasy possess an uncanny knack for taking our imaginations and fears to their limits. And Molinsky doesn't hold back. Nothing is too fanciful for this podcast - from the Classics to LARPing, Imaginary Worlds is absolutely a show about the human experiment.
hell of a long list of awards, since 2006 .
Why You'll Want To Tune In: This podcast will straight up make you and your conversation smarter. Its 11- year stretch of daily episodes means it'll keep your queue topped off. And Boyd is tough - she asks the questions you would.
intersections between humans and the tech we create.
Why You'll Want To Tune In: Come for the privacy series; it's unbelievably important. Stay for an incredibly nuanced and balanced conversation about our inescapably tech-driven present & future.
granted when it comes to forming our "selves." Can people really change? How do societal norms affect our decisions? What do modern psychology and science have to offer to our most persistent beliefs about the "self?"
Why You'll Want To Tune In: No question, this show's topic is a brave one. It juggles our ancient, deeply-ingrained ideas with the emerging sciences that suggest we've been wrong all along. Catch up on the paradigm-shifting Season 2 while they gear up 2017's Season 3.
that inevitably equates to a PhD-equivalent in Twitter.
Why You'll Want To Tune In: Reply All's roots are firmly in what I would call the Internet of the Arcane. They're at their best when running down and deconstructing the truly weird of the Internet.
As the podcast gains popularity, it's feeling out some growing pains. But I feel confident Alex & PJ are going to find their way back to what makes Reply All awesome even on its off days.
AND NOW FOR SOME MUSIC!
Music is a major player in my life - yours, too, right? Music is the soundtrack of our lives.
I fell in love with singing in a Southern Baptist Church.... until I got too (ahem) "creative" with the standards. I met my husband fronting a Blues band in my late 20s, and still say that my marriage is largely founded on our extensive vinyl collection.
The band still gets together every year. If there is a soul, I'm pretty sure mine is in 3/4.
Popular music in a way that matters for people who REALLY love music.
Why You'll Want To Tune In: If you feel you're musically elite, consider yourself recovered from that snobbery. This podcast traces Lady Gaga's beats back to Beethoven. It's NO joke.
Or that the history of MTV is grab-your-gut hilarious? That "Taps" has a history that's not as reverent as you imagine?
Why You'll Want To Tune In: Between The Liner Notes literally draws the line between music history and our humanity. Our stories have a soundtrack, and this podcast makes clear why that matters.
Why You'll Want To Tune In: Song Exploder is not for the weak of heart. It dissimulates the magic of music a bit. It's like listening to an autopsy of your grandfather. It's tough. But for those inclined, there's tons of knowledge to be had.
The podcasts listed in my First Edition Must-Listen list remain stellar, and at the top of my Stitcher.
Of particular note, the recent Poverty Series, hosted by On The Media. It will change your WORLD.
I am not kidding. If you consider yourself a liberal, I especially want you to listen to this.
Snap Judgment, This American Life, RADIO LAB, On Being ... they all make us better humans.
Did I miss YOUR favorite podcast? Tell me about it! For real ... and please!
