Maybe you didn't even know that you can customize your website's 404 page. You totally can.
In fact, it shouldn't take you more than a few minutes after you've settled on a plan!
The Opposite Of Wasted Space
Folks end up on 404 Pages for all kinds of reasons. Fine. But no matter what, they haven't found what they were looking for. And that is about the LAST thing we want people to experience on our websites, right?
So let's ditch the generic 404 for something that will surprise, entertain, engage, and help our site visitors get where they want to go!
The Error Page is essentially a goof. A bad link. A misdirect from a referring page. An outdated offer you killed. It happens all the time.
It happens SO often in fact, that my last Google Analytics report showed my 404 page got more views than any other single offer. Ouch, y'all.
I fixed it on the quick! But it got me thinking about how much we DON'T think about this crucial element of our websites:
ANATOMY OF A GREAT 404 PAGE:
1. Showcase Your Personality - The 404 page is the perfect place to let your wacky wild light shine!
If you let your 404 go to the Generic message, your customer is already sighing, rolling her eyes, and looking for a different answer to their Google question.
If you get REAL on your 404 ... you can by the power of your wit and resourcefulness alone, ask them to stay and try again.
Hold on, I'll give you some more examples:
So the litany of AMAZING 404 pages goes on a little bit forever.
If you're not doing anything else tonight just go to images.google.com and search for "awesome 404 pages."
Bring it! Show me your 404! Link it right here. You might get chocolates.
I said might. You really never know what I'm going to do!
