When I had a tiny business identity crisis last week, these became urgent and non-negotiable questions up for serious review. And as I thought about that, it occurred to me how much business is like dating.
So I endeavored to get all 50 Shades of Vulnerable about my biz.
What if I had to write an online dating profile for my business?
Could I? In a way that would make me want to date, er... hire myself?
Well, I did. And today I'm challenging you to do the same!
Yes, the idea of a dating profile is technically absurd.
After torturing myself to cleverly answer a few personal questions and choose the right photo, I am purposely subjecting myself to rejection and judgment in exchange for the possibility of finding a "match."
And yet ... that is exactly what we ALL do when we start a business, create that website, make social media accounts, and virtually or physically open our doors.
Once I got over that excruciating truth, I figured it could be a darned useful analogy.
The similarities are such that I saw great fun - and INSIGHT - in the idea of taking this analogy all the way.
If the internet were a matchmaking service for products, services, and those who need them, would I make muster? Would I pick me?
Even more to the point, could I effectively cut down my what-i-do prose to fit the strict and attention-defict requirements of a dating profile?
I did. And took me a brutal 6 hours to do it.
Some of my answers, when I got all ridiculously honest about it, surprised the crap out of me. But now I don't need 30 minutes and a tequila to describe what I do, why I do it, and who I do it for.
I know. I'm clear. I've got this.
And that shit is priceless.
The template I've created for us here is a mad scientist mashup from OKCupid, Alexandra Franzen, and RedLemonClub. Here's how it looks for me - your downloadable template is below.
To be fair, I happened to be at a point in my business where I badly needed this kind of exercise.
If you are, too, then I challenge you to try it.
Download Your Template here.
Because next week, I'll show you how I'm integrating these finely-tuned, short, and succint phrases into CRUCIAL sections of my website copy. And how you can, too.
Don't miss the next installment of this series!
It's right here!
